When I was there
October 2 - November 13th, 2024
“This perhaps is at the heart of the work: finding a new path where certainty and permanence are beside the point.”
Benjamin Rubloff
Winner of 2022 Pollock-Krasner award.
Benjamin Rubloff’s paintings are more than they first appear to be. What might initially seem like gestural abstraction actually conceals layers of deeper meaning. As Rubloff navigates the streets of Berlin, he documents the city’s graffiti, described by Duncan Ballantyne as “the tattooed flesh of the city” in a newly published book accompanying the exhibition. Rubloff then meticulously translates these cropped photographs into photorealistic paintings. Over time, he returns to the original locations to re-photograph what remains, capturing the ongoing transformation of the cityscape. His work explores the complex relationship between photography, place, and landscape painting, revealing the ever-evolving nature of the urban environment.
